FreeWire Help

Getting Started User Guide

1. Installation
Download FreeWire from our site. You will be downloading an "active installer", meaning that your initial download is a small file (about 120Kb) that dynamically downloads and installs the files you specify to be installed. Please make sure you remain connected to the Internet while you run FreeWire's installer. Once you've downloaded the "active install" simply follow the instructions onscreen and FreeWire and the Java Runtime Environment components needed to run it will be downloaded and installed on the fly. Please note that the files are several megabytes, and may take some time to download and install.

2. Starting FreeWire
Once you've installed FreeWire successfully, go to your Start Menu > FreeWire and run FreeWire, or double-click on the desktop icon if you chose to create one. Note that FreeWire takes a few seconds to load. This is because FreeWire is written in Java, a programming language that allows cross-platform compatibility, but requires a Java Runtime Environment to run in Windows. Java programs take a few seconds to load, but once loaded will perform as well or better than native-code programs.

3. Specify your Options
When you first run FreeWire, you will be prompted to choose a/multiple location(s) for your shared files to be stored and to choose the type of Internet connection you connect with. Also, you will be given the option to allow FreeWire to quickly scan your hard drive for media files that could be shared, and include them in Shared folders. Entering this information is very important because it allows FreeWire to connect you to the Gnutella network in the fastest way possible, and allows you to keep tabs on where the files you are sharing and downloading are.

4. Searching, Downloading, and otherwise Using FreeWire
When FreeWire launches, you can type your search terms into the Search Box. Note that it may take a few moments to connect to the Gnutella network when you first launch the program. The "Search" button will be unavailable until you are connected to the network. Typically, the longer you run FreeWire the more Gnutella hosts you connect to, thereby increasing the chance that your search will yield quality results.
